Blake Woodruff made his film debut as Mike Baker in the recent Steve Martin hit Cheaper By The Dozen. We talked with the eight year old about the film, and why he’d like to play Brad Pitt’s son someday.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Why did you want to become an actor in the first place?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Well I just started seeing all these movies so I said, “Mom I want to be that character when I grow up.” So she said, “Okay.” And then for my birthday she said, “Surprise!” and then I just went into acting classes. I already had a manager and an agent and she said let’s get going. So that’s how I became an actor.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Was it really hard for you or was it kind of easy?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
I think it was kind of easy but in a way it was a little bit hard.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Is it hard to memorize lines?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Well actually, since there are all those takes, all those cuts, it’s actually pretty easy to memorize your lines.
THE STAR SCOOP:
What do you like to do in your free time?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Dirt bike riding, go on the internet, look up stuff, play Nintendo. And that’s pretty much it.
THE STAR SCOOP:
So the first movie you got to do was Cheaper by the Dozen and you got to work with people like Bonnie Hunt and Steve Martin who are pretty much known for being funny people. Were they like that offset too?
WOODRUFF:
Yeah. They were really funny. Especially Steve Martin. He would do magic tricks and play his banjo and stuff like that.
THE STAR SCOOP:
There are some pretty big teen stars in the movie – Hilary Duff and Tom Welling. Did you get a chance to hang out with them at all?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Yeah. Tom Welling, I think I got along with more than anybody on set, because Tom Welling is just a very normal, nice, and a private man. He’s really fun to work with.
THE STAR SCOOP:
How does the Cheaper by the Dozen family compare to your family?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Well, we have four people in our family so we have two brothers and sisters — two boys two girls and we have two parents so that’s six altogether. It’s kinda like the family in Cheaper a little bit.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Is it kind of crazy?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Yes. It’s very hectic at our house.
THE STAR SCOOP:
So who would you say was the closest friend you made from the movie?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Tom Welling.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have to manage school and acting at the same time?
WOODRUFF:
Usually when they’re not doing any filming that I’m in then they usually send me to school.
THE STAR SCOOP:
What’s a normal day in your life like?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
A normal day is in my house is non stop talking, never silence. That’s in my house (laughs) and outdoors it’s just have a great time and just be normal.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you ever get recognized by people?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Maybe like, once in a great while somebody will say you look like the kid from Cheaper by the Dozen and then my mom will say or me will say yeah he was in that movie. And then they’ll go really? Wow!
THE STAR SCOOP:
Was it weird seeing yourself on the big screen?
WOODRUFF:
Yeah it was.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have any current projects that you’re working on that you could tell us about?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
I just did a pilot for the new Mr. Ed. I got to see the biggest horse in the world! I didn’t get to ride it but I hung out with him a lot.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have a favorite animal?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
My favorite animal I think would be a snake.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Out of all the questions we’ve asked you, is there one you wished we had asked, and can you answer it please?
WOODRUFF:
Yeah. (thinks) Who’s the best friend of mine in the world?
THE STAR SCOOP:
So who is that?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
My brother. He’s really nice and I hang out with him and we play video games together and we play board games and we just have a really good time playing together.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Is there a role you want to play or some character you’ve always wanted to be?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Yes. I want to be Brad Pitt’s son. I don’t care what movie, just Brad Pitt’s son. That’d be the best!
THE STAR SCOOP:
Are you a big fan of his?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
I’m not that big of a fan but my mom drools all over him.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have a favorite actor or actress that you look up to?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
I think that my favorite actor is Tom Welling because I got along with him but all the other actors I think of them as normal people just being in movies. That’s what I think of them as.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you feel kind of special being an actor?
BLAKE WOODRUFF:
Well I like being an actor and then again sometimes I just want to be a normal kid.
