Colin Mochrie: “When we’re in trouble…we have the most fun”

THE STAR SCOOP:
You and Brad are doing another round of the tour.

COLIN MOCHRIE:
This is, I think, the most fun we have in our careers, the improv.   We certainly have never even come close to talking about packing it up. We still love it. We still have fun. We’re still coming up with different games and different ways of doing the show so it’s still fresh for us. As long as it’s still fresh for us and we’re still having fun, I think we’ll keep doing it.

THE STAR SCOOP:
You are visiting places you’ve been to before. What can you do to ensure that it’s a different experience but with the same fun and signature style that you bring to the show?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
Sometimes I think we work too hard on it, because on Whose Line, we had our familiar staple of games that we played. People would watch to see “Props” or “Greatest Hits” or whatever. And they wouldn’t mind if it was like two weeks in a row. We’re usually a year and a half between returning to a place. So even if we’re doing the same games, the suggestions are always different.

There’s a couple of places…Milwaukee, I think we’ve done like seven years in a  row. We always try when we go to those places, to invent new games or find different ways of doing our old games. So far it’s worked. But sometimes I think if we just do it, it will be different [laughs].

The audience is almost like the third character with us. They dictate how the show is going to go and every audience is different, so that makes every show different.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What can people expect if they decide to check it [An Evening With Colin and Brad] out this time around?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
More of the same, but different, if that makes any sense. We’ve come up with some different games and we’ve added things to make other games more dangerous and difficult for us. Like the “Sound Effects” game. We used to bring two people up on the stage. Now we have one person on the stage and then we pass the mic around the audience so that more people get involved.

What’s great about that is it doesn’t put the pressure on one person…and because the audience is in the dark, they can have more fun with it. We’re constantly trying to come up with stuff that keeps us uncomfortable on stage. Times when we’re in trouble, that’s when we have the most fun.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What can you say about working with Brad?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
He’s alright. You know, I’m trying to help him out. We’ve known each other for about twenty years. I think the only Whose Line person I’ve known longer is Ryan because we grew up together. When you’ve worked with someone for that long, it sort of transcends a working relationship.

We’re good friends. We’ve gone on vacations together with our wives. We both have the same kind of attitude towards the show. We just want it to be fun but we also want to challenge ourselves. We never want to get into that area where we just keep doing the same thing over and over again.

THE STAR SCOOP:
The news recently came out that Drew Carey is doing some new, sort of unspecified comedy show. Everybody wants to know if there are plans for you to have any involvement in that?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
Yeah, absolutely. I’m going to be doing it, as is Brad. I’m not sure if Ryan is. I was actually talking to him about a week ago and he was still trying to juggle things around, so I’m not sure.

Most of the Whose Line guys will be doing it and some new faces. That’ll be fun. I’m not really quite sure what the set up is or how it’s structured. All I know is, it will be nice seeing those guys again because we always have a lot of fun together.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Will there be any music on the tour?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
We have a little music. Because it’s just the two of us, it’s really hard…I sort of more, talk sing. Brad’s a good singer so he has that part covered. I’m more the…I don’t think there’s even a classification of what I do.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have any other acting projects in the works?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
If you’re Canadian, you should be seeing a lot of me in the spring. I did two sitcoms up here. I was up north in Canada doing a movie called Ecstasy with a great cast: Billy Boyd who played Pippin in Lord of the Rings, and Kristin Kreuk who played Lana Lang on Smallville. It’s based on a book written by the guy who did Trainspotting. It’s about the drug culture of people who take ecstasy.

So that was kind of interesting. Although it is funny in a way, it’s a very dark humor. My part was a more serious part. I look forward to seeing it come out.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Have to mention that we recently did an interview with Munro Chambers.

COLIN MOCHRIE:
Oh yeah, I know him.

THE STAR SCOOP:
We asked him to tell us some things we didn’t know about him, and he said, well, Colin Mochrie is my uncle. We said, if we ask him that, is he going to say that’s true?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
Yes, he absolutely is…his father and my wife are cousins, but they’re more like brother and sister. So, as a result, my son and Munro and his brother Thomas have become very close. It’s been kind of cool to watch his progress. He’s doing really well. He’s a really good actor. Because we live close to where he shoots Degrassi, he often stays over at our place and runs lines with my wife and she gives him tips.

He’s doing great…I just hope he remembers his uncle if things go really well for him. He’s a lovely young man. He’s made us proud, not only through his accomplishments. Both he and Thomas, and my son have grown into really lovely men. We’re all proud of them.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Is there anything you would like to tell all of your fans?

COLIN MOCHRIE:
We’re looking forward to doing Drew’s show. The tour is still going strong. There have been rumblings lately that maybe…they’re trying to get Whose Line to come back. I don’t know if that was a secret…oh well.

Ever since the show was canceled, there’s always been, sort of talk of trying to bring it back somehow. It’s looking a little closer at this point. The beauty of television is you never know really what’s going on. Nobody does.

We’re hoping because we all enjoyed doing the show and we always have fun together. We hope it does come back.
