Dana Davis Exclusive Interview

Dana DavisDana Davis can be seen on NBC’s hit, Heroes (Monday 9/8c NBC), as Monica Dawson. We caught up with the latest gal to join the group of heroes to see if the job is really as incredible as it seems!

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about your character on Heroes.

DANA DAVIS:
I play a character named Monica Dawson, who was introduced in episode four, and we meet her in post Katrina New Orleans, and she’s this girl who has lost her mother in the storm, and she sort of had to drop out of college and take on the bread winner of the family. She has a little brother that she has to take care of, as well as an ailing grandmother. She’s just this girl with this heart of gold, and when we meet her, she’s sort of discovering that she has this new ability, which is to mimic anything that she sees. She’s like a copycat. It’s been a lot of fun. We started right away with tons of stunt work. My character’s so physical.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you get to do a lot of the stunts yourself?

DANA DAVIS:
I do have some stunt doubles. They try to get me to do as much as I can to make it look as realistic as possible.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How do you think all the interacting characters works to make the show better?

DANA DAVIS:
I think it’s that element of it just being so fast paced, and so quick. Not the kind of show that can have five characters. Even the main cast, they’re going to different places. It’s like, when you’re traveling so far, you’re bound to meet different people, and I think that the producers wanted to bring in that element of making it world-wide. You get to experience so much, it’s like a ride.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Were you a fan of the show before you were a cast member?

DANA DAVIS:
I was a huge fan. I was so excited about it. I told all my friends about it, and we watched together. It became a ritual. So when I found out they were adding a character, I was beyond excited, and I did so much preparation.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How has being a fan of the show affected you?

DANA DAVIS:
I think the nervous element, I’d never experienced that before. I kind of go into everything like, here we go. It’s really just a job, you just go to work, and you do your job and go home. With Heroes, for the first time, I went into it so nervous. Like a little kid starting school for the first time. I’m like, I don’t want to mess up my favorite show. After a couple weeks, I sort of eased right into it. Now I can just enjoy it. Instead of being nervous, I’m excited. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on my job.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How do you think Monica’s superpower measures up? Would you rather have a different power?

DANA DAVIS:
I always felt that if I was Monica, I would join the NBA or do something crazy. I would put it out there. I think her power, in reality, if someone had a power like this, they’d be the most famous person in the world, because they could do anything. I think it fits into the show because it’s bringing the action segment back.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What else are you working on at the moment?

DANA DAVIS:
I did shoot a movie called Prom Night. It will be coming out in April of 2008. It’s with Brittany Snow. It’s a teen slasher movie. There’s a slasher on the lose. There’s lots of blood and gore. But it’s set with the backdrop of this awesome prom, designer dresses. It’s like blood and prom together, a winning formula. It was really, really, fun. I think people are going to like it.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What can you say about movie versus TV work?

DANA DAVIS:
I get restless, and that’s how I am with my work. I like the element of film because you get to take on a new character often. It can become kind of tedious with television. The thing about Heroes that makes it different is you don’t get bored. Even though you’re playing the same character, they make it so exciting. But most actors aren’t that lucky to work on a show that’s fun like that.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What is something you want your fans to know about you?

DANA DAVIS:
I always joke that I’m like the most boring person in Hollywood. Really, I come home, I play guitar hero with my little niece. I love having dinner parties. I’m like a kid who is trapped in a grown up body. I love having fun, game night, having my friends over, doing silly things. I’m not the club, party type of girl. I like to keep it so normal. My mom wanted me to have a normal childhood, and I’m so grateful for that. It was so important, and it shaped me as a person.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What else should we know?

DANA DAVIS:
I’m also a writer. I finished a screenplay, called My Name is Mary Elizabeth, and we sold the option to an independent production company. Early next year we’re going to start production on the movie I wrote. It’s just a story about a young girl who is tortured by her parents all in the name of religion. It’s sort of a look at the dark side of what can happen, it’s sort of a dark story. I’ve been writing for a long time, and finally I feel I can call myself a writer. That feels good.
