George Stults plays 7th Heaven hunk Kevin Kinkirk. As the straitlaced police officer and Lucy Camden’s hottie hubby, George offers up not only his acting skills, but great looks as well. He’s also appeared in such successful shows as Will and Grace and Friends. With these roles accomplished early in his career, it’s not hard to see George is on the right track. If you think his character of Kevin Kinkirk is a sweetie, you’re going to love George just as much! You can see him Monday nights at 8/7central on the WB.

THE STAR SCOOP:
According to your biography, a theatrical agent gave you her card and insisted that you call her. Why did you decide to make the call?
GEORGE STULTS:
Why did I decide? I decided because my brother helped me decide. I knew nothing about the entertainment industry, and never thought I actually would (laughs). I never had an interest in it. I grew up not watching many movies or rarely watching TV. My brother and I were very close. We were pretty much outdoor kids. We were always outside even until late at night. And I was going to college at Whittier College and I had one summer school course to take before I graduated and I planned on getting my diploma and then going into the navy as an officer. I came out to Hollywood to see a friend of mine from high school who worked for a theatrical agent and I’d been out to Hollywood a couple of times but that was just to have fun with my buddies.
So I went out there to have lunch with my friend who works for a theatrical agent and her and I were sitting there eating lunch on Sunset Boulevard and a woman who was a theatrical agent drove by and saw me and jumped out of the car and ran up and handed me her card. I had no idea this happens or would happen and I didn’t know what to expect out of it (laughs). I looked at it and I said wow, that looks interesting and I handed it to my friend and she goes well let me check when I go into work tomorrow if this is even legit. So she checks and I told the story to my brother and he thought it was hilarious and he thought I should call and go meet with her. My friend Sarah called us back and said yeah, they’re a huge commercial industry, small theatrical department and my brother said alright you better call her and I said alright, why not?
So I went in and met with her and she told me that I could succeed in this industry and I should take some acting classes. So I thought alright that’s cool, I might as well take some acting classes while I’m waiting to get my diploma. And I went in again to meet with her a couple days later and I brought my brother with me and she said she wanted to represent me and he said well you can’t represent him unless you represent both of us (laughs). So that’s pretty much how we got our first agent and then we started taking acting classes right away and I forgot how much fun it was because it’d been years since I’d done it — the last time I’d done it was in high school — I did a couple musicals but that was just to hit on the girls (laughs). But it was a blast.
Since I was with them commercially and theatrically, I thought right away for sure I could at least get a commercial and start making enough money to survive out here. I had no idea what I was doing (laughs). So my brother and I moved out here right after we graduated and started pursuing it. We’ve been really, really fortunate.
THE STAR SCOOP:
You got to do Will and Grace, which is very popular.
GEORGE STULTS:
Yeah, I absolutely had a blast and those guys were so good to me. It was fun but I had very little experience in the business. You know, I was even fortunate enough to go on that show and have the one word that I had. But I got to see, you know, how much fun they had and how great of a job it was and I was so jealous immediately that I knew that that’s what I wanted to do. So I was real fortunate to get on there and hang with those guys and see them do their thing in person. It was a great experience.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Everything these days seems to be super hero related, so, who is your favorite superhero, and if you could play one, who it would be?
GEORGE STULTS:
I’d have no problem kicking Tobey McGuire out of Spiderman because Spiderman has been my favorite superhero since I can possibly even remember having my first thought (laughs). I love Spiderman, but he does a great job so I’m going to have to find myself another superhero to become one day.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you remember your first acting job?
GEORGE STULTS:
I remember the first commercial thing I did. I went on audition and they told me it was a Japanese mini van commercial and I went out on the commercial and they told me I was supposed to pretend I was friends with this group of guys and they were going to the beach in a mini van with surfboards and whatever. And somehow when I went on the audition, I auditioned with random guys not knowing if I had a chance of getting it. They called me and told me I had got the job and the next week I had to be at a certain house in Hollywood to shoot the commercial. Anyway, I show up there and they put me in like a surfer dude outfit, and they take me out back behind the house and I get to meet Leonardo DiCaprio because he’s in the commercial. It was pretty cool, the first job I got, I got to hang out with Leonardo DiCaprio and pretend I was a surfer for a Japanese mini van commercial (laughs).
THE STAR SCOOP:
You’re doing 7th Heaven now. Do you remember at all what your first day on the set was like?
GEORGE STULTS:
Yeah. Of course I remember. The first day on set I had to do a kissing scene with Beverly Mitchell who plays Lucy and I was nervous, scared to death because I’d never done that before and it was my first day and I had just met these people and now I have to have an intimate kissing scene (laughs). But she was super cool about it. Actually, I tell this story all the time, that my brother, he was on the show before I was and they brought him on the show to be Jessica Biel’s love interest. And so they were both there my first day when I did the kissing scene with Beverly. And they were messing with me, trying to tell me how Beverly’s previous love interest wouldn’t do a good enough job in the kissing scenes so they ended up not being on the show that long which made me even more nervous. And they were telling me how I needed to use tongue and they were just messing with me the whole time which made it even worse (laughs). But Beverly’s such a cool chick that it ended up working out in the end (laughs).
THE STAR SCOOP:
How are you different from your character (Kevin Kinkirk) and how are you the same?
GEORGE STULTS:
Well, I’d like to pretend I’m as nice of a guy as Kevin. I think George is a little crazier at times than Kevin. He’d prefer to go skydiving one day and I would doubt Kevin would do that. Kevin’s Mr. Clean-cut, really proper, does the right thing at all times at least up to this point. I wish I could be the guy who did the right thing at every time but unfortunately, (laughs) that’s not the case.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Is there a moment or an episode from 7th Heaven that sticks out in your mind over everything else?
GEORGE STULTS:
Yeah. My favorite one so far was the episode where Kevin and Lucy got married. I got to wear a tuxedo and feel like a stud and not married in real life, it was cool to pretend that I was actually getting married. I just though it was a good episode. They’re all good episodes, good learning situations and so it’s hard to pick one out. Me personally there hasn’t been one — like most of the other characters who’ve been on there for eight seasons, they’ve been able to work with the creator of the show, Brenda Hampton and they’ve known her so long that they get to take personal things and add that to the show. I haven’t been on the show long enough.
THE STAR SCOOP:
There was an episode recently where someone squirts you with a hose. Did they do that once or a bunch of times?
GEORGE STULTS:
They only had to do it twice, the close up on me where he blasts me with the water was just — we did that twice so it wasn’t that bad. And that was probably the worst acting I’ve ever seen myself do and I’ve done some horrible acting in my time. And I purposely made my brother watch that last night so he could get angry at me (laughs).
THE STAR SCOOP:
So do you watch the show? Do you watch yourself at all?
GEORGE STULTS:
It’s definitely hard for me, it’s very uncomfortable, but it’s just like anything — the more you do it, the more you get used to it. When I first got out here I was like, I can’t look at all, it makes me sick to my stomach. But I knew that in order to learn and get better then I gotta watch what I’ve done. But like I said I did a horrible job in the close up when that kid sprayed me (laughs). Now I know never to do that again.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Are you close with the entire cast?
GEORGE STULTS:
Well, I’m closer to the ones that I work with more often, like Beverly, and the girl who plays Kevin’s partner, her name’s Rachel Blanchard, her character’s Roxanne. We’re all really close and good friends, but it’s whoever you spend more time with that you’re close to in any situation. So I’d say definitely those two.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have to shoot long days?
GEORGE STULTS:
It takes eight working days to shoot one episode and everyday – Monday through Friday starts at six thirty, for hair and makeup and wardrobe and all that stuff, and then you go into rehearse. All the actors have to be on stage at seven a.m. if you’re in the first scene and that’s only if you’re in the first scene. If you’re an actor then you’ll do the blocking and then you’ll go back out and change and finish getting your makeup and hair done. The crew gets done setting up the lighting and the whole set and they call you back and that’s when you start shooting. But usually, 7th Heaven‘s been going so long and these people have been together working so long that they do a great job doing it. So it’s pretty fast compared to other shows. They know exactly what they want and how to get it. So they’ll start around six thirty and usually end at around six o’clock. But sometimes if you don’t get all the scenes done, you work until two in the morning. So it can be very long. There can be a lot of sitting around, too. It takes a while to get what they want.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Was it hard for you to memorize your lines?
GEORGE STULTS:
It was so hard for me (laughs). But just like anything, the more you do it, the better you’re gonna get. And I was lucky enough to be working with a great group of people where I’ve learned something new every single day working with those guys. But, yeah, I was awful in the beginning. I was just worried about not being able to do my job. The more things you’re thinking about it, it kind of screws with your head but after you do it a lot you get more and more comfortable with it and get better at it.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Favorite TV show?
GEORGE STULTS:
I can’t believe you’re asking me that. Of course, 7th Heaven (laughs). I don’t have a favorite, favorite, but one of my most recent shows that I like watching is called Nip Tuck. I think it’s excellent acting. You wouldn’t catch Officer Kevin Kinkirk watching Nip Tuck.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Favorite food?
GEORGE STULTS:
Favorite food. There’s this rotisserie chicken salad that I absolutely love and I have to have at least once a week. But I mean, I love pizza, I love pasta, all that good stuff but I gotta have a salad at least once a week.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have any nicknames?
GEORGE STULTS:
Yeah, they call me hor-hey (as in Jorge, George in Spanish). I guess most people call me Jorge, if they don’t call me George. I like that one (laughs).
THE STAR SCOOP:
What were you like as a teenager?
GEORGE STULTS:
All I wanted to do while I was a teenager was go out and play most of the time and just enjoy life and have fun. I wasn’t big into school, you know, I look back now and wish I would have spent more time studying and enjoyed it more. It’s not for everyone and I didn’t enjoy it that much like going to school and studying — some stuff I did but some of it I didn’t. My attention span wasn’t there. I was lucky. I had great parents and my brother and I and we’ve been real fortunate. I have such a good family background but I was kind of crazy, I liked to do crazy stuff. I like enjoying myself, doing stuff outdoors: rock climbing, hiking, camping, that’s how I spent most of my time when I was in Michigan. We were out on the lake, every single day. I was a lifeguard in my teens for like five years. We were always outdoors, every single day, enjoying the water, the mountains in Colorado. That’s pretty much how it was.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Who’s been the biggest inspiration in your life to you?
GEORGE STULTS:
I guess my brother because he’s always been more of the outgoing one who goes after exactly what he wants and I was always the shyer one that kept to himself. I don’t know (laughs).
THE STAR SCOOP:
Where do you see yourself, probably in the next few years?
GEORGE STULTS:
Well, hopefully 7th Heaven will never end I’ll be on there for that long, but unfortunately the show’s been on for- I’m glad it’s been on for as long as it has but unfortunately I don’t know how much longer it can go. Hopefully it will continue to go but if not I would like to try some film because I haven’t done that before. But I someday would like to be on a sitcom, a successful sitcom. I’d like to get good enough to be able to do that.
THE STAR SCOOP:
In your acting career so far, what goals have you set for yourself?
GEORGE STULTS:
My first goal was to get a job (laughs). And I did that. And I think I’ve just been fortunate to be surrounded by good people who believed in me as much as I believe in myself. And you know, I just lucked out and got on a great show like 7th Heaven.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have an official site for your fans?
GEORGE STULTS:
Well, right now there are these two young ladies and they did a great job putting a site together called George Stults’s World (www.georgestultsworld.com). And I’m trying to get in contact with them so we can make that an official site but I guess it hasn’t officially become the official site yet (laughs). Note: The official George Stults website is now www.georgestults.com
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you ever get bothered by fans at all?
GEORGE STULTS:
Usually it only happens when I’m outside of LA, because people are used to it in Los Angeles. We’re Hollywood, it’s no big deal to see movie stars, TV stars, whatever. But if I go outside of LA, that’s when people freak out. And if you’re on their favorite TV show, of course they want to come meet you and whatever. But I’ve been lucky enough not to have anyone scary (laughs) come up to me. But usually when that stuff happens I’m purposely going out of town to promote for the WB. But it’s a lot of fun. I’ve been lucky. I got to travel all over the country to promote 7th Heaven.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Do you have a favorite place you got to go?
GEORGE STULTS:
Well, besides my hometown of Detroit, (laughs) St. Louis has an enormous 7th Heaven fan base. And everyone was super cool when I got to go there.
THE STAR SCOOP:
Besides 7th Heaven do you have any other projects that you’re working on currently?
GEORGE STULTS:
Right now, no. I’m trying to get a job during the hiatus. It’s hard to find a job not only that you’re right for, but that you’re good enough for. We have so little time to do it– you have to be in the right place at the right time and have representation that are working hard for you to find you that job. It’s tough. And eventually, something will happen. ‘Cause I’m not leaving this town until it does (laughs).
