Kendra Andrews Exclusive Interview

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about Step Up 3D.

KENDRA ANDREWS:
This is a really historical moment in dance. It’s the first ever 3D dance movie. We have been so excited for the world to see this because it was shot a year ago in New York. It’s all any of us have been talking about for a year. We can’t wait for everyone to see what we did. It’s such a phenomenal project. The time has come and it’s such a thrill.

It’s an adventure. It’s like being on a rollercoaster ride. I’ve never seen anything like it. I was not prepared for what I saw when I went in there. Being part of the filming process, you think you have an idea in your head how it might turn out. When I sat down in the theater and I watched the final edit, my jaw was on the floor. It was just the coolest thing I had ever seen! I just want to encourage as many people as possible to go see it and experience it. You won’t regret it.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What is it about 3D that makes a dance movie so much better?

KENDRA ANDREWS:
Bringing the 3D technology to a dance film allows your audience to be directly involved and that’s just so cool and so thrilling and exciting for an audience member. Dance isn’t a two dimensional art form when you’re witnessing it live, when you’re seeing it performed. Dancers are doing such large-than-life, incredible movements. When you see these people live, you’re blown away by what they can do.

To use the 3D technology to bring the audience member in as if they’re watching it live right in front of you, see hands flying at you, feet flying at you, that’s what’s so cool about it. It gets the audience directly involved. It makes them a part of the moment and you feel a lot closer to the movement and a lot closer to the characters and a lot closer to the action!

THE STAR SCOOP:

For readers who have not seen Step Up 3D, tell us about your character in the movie.

KENDRA ANDREWS:
The character that I play is Anala, and she’s the tough girl of the house. Very strong, fiery, and fierce and she’s kind of the mother hen tough girl. I had a blast playing her and it was the best thing I’ve ever experienced. There was never a dull moment on set. It never felt like a job. That’s why it’s such a dream come true. You’re doing what you love. All of us grew up dancing.

KENDRA ANDREWS:
So you have some background in dance.

KENDRA ANDREWS:
I grew up dancing since I was little. I started training in classical dance, ballet, jazz and then tap. I actually went to college for dance. I went to Florida State University and got my degree in Dance. It was a BFA in Dance. When I was college, the genres that we had in our curriculum were ballet and modern. I got really curious about [hip hop] and wanted to explore what that was about. That came later in my life and my training.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What was the training like for Step Up 3D?

KENDRA ANDREWS:
We were training for months. Our battle scenes – there were three different battles that we learned…it’s a dancer’s dream come true first of all, to be working with the choreographers who were working on it, people that every dancer wants to work with. We had very long days of rehearsal. We would learn about a battle a week. The next week you’d start a new battle and you’d learn that, clean it, and go on to the next one. We did that for about a month. A lot of hard work. A couple of injuries along the way, but it’s all in a day’s work. It was just the best time.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What have you been up to lately?

KENDRA ANDREWS:
Right now we’re doing a lot of promotional work to get the word out and to get people excited. We went to Jimmy Kimmel and performed, George Lopez…the next day we were at the Teen Choice Awards. We’ll be doing that for a bit. After that, I’m really excited for what opportunities come. I definitely want to pursue more film work.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What should people know about you?

KENDRA ANDREWS:
I am a huge Quentin Tarantino fan, of all genres. I don’t know that I have a particular favorite. I’m a huge fan of all performing arts. Going back to dance, there’s not just one style of dance that I prefer over another. I’m a huge fan of all dance styles.

THE STAR SCOOP:
If someone is interested in taking up dance and hasn’t been dancing long, is maybe a little older, is there a style they might pick up a little quicker or is easier?

Kendra Andrews:
That’s a good question. I honestly think that in order to really get comfortable with anything, to really be informed or knowledgeable about any dance form, you really have to invest a lot of time into it. I don’t know that there’s one that you can learn quicker than another. I would encourage people to try anything they’re interested in.

That’s how I was as a kid…I couldn’t say that I Was one style of a dancer. I could never say I’m just a jazz dancer. I’m just a ballet dancer. Not that there’s anything wrong with if you do just one style. Those genres are so incredible and take so much mastery and skill. Whatever interests you, don’t be afraid and just go check it out. You have nothing to lose. Each one brings something so special to the table.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What is it about dance that’s so captivating right now? There are so many TV shows and movies that are so popular.

KENDRA ANDREWS:
Isn’t it great? It’s about time. It’s so nice. America and the world is embracing dance…I’m so excited about that. Maybe it was because for a long time, people couldn’t see it, and now that it’s accessible, it’s in your face, on TV shows, on the Internet, on movies…because it’s so visible, people are like, I can’t get enough of it. It’s entertaining is such an understatement. There’s something very human and something very universal about dance.

I think the most exciting thing about it is how much it can reach someone, even someone who knows nothing about dance, somebody who has never danced a day in their life, but they see dance. There’s something that happens to your spirit. There’s something that happens to your body. There’s something that happens to your emotions when we see people move like that. It reaches out to you. Now that it’s so accessible, people are really catching onto it and getting excited about it again.
