Munro Chambers Interview: Eli, “Eclare” & more

THE STAR SCOOP:
An important place to start is the recent hoarding story line. A lot of people are really interested in how you prepared for it. With Degrassi, certain issues come up again, but this one is totally new and different.

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
Yeah. When I got the script about the hoarding story line, I was so excited. It was so challenging for me as an actor to do such an intense role. It’s not a strange disorder, but a disorder you don’t really hear about, and yet it’s so very real.

I went to go see an actual hoarder and just got to see how they live their life, and what it was like for them. It’s more like an anxiety thing where they can’t part from anything.  If they lose that one thing, it means that the world is going to crash down in their own specific way. I thought it was very interesting.

I’m glad that people are getting to know about it…my job as the actor is just to make it believable and do justice to that disorder, and I really hope that I’ve done that job. Given the tweets I’ve been given and the comments, I feel like I have done it, and I just hope that they accept it and they enjoy it and that I’m not making a mockery of it.

THE STAR SCOOP:
The relationship with Clare! Why do you think Eli and Clare are such a good match?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
We’re both creative in our own sense. With writing obviously, in English class. That’s one thing. With both our characters at the moment, they’re both going through such struggles. She’s going through her parent’s divorce. I’m dealing with my dead ex-girlfriend and my hoarding all the time. I feel like we’re kind of each other’s rock.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How has it been working with Aislinn [Paul]? A really astute fan pointed out that this is not the first time you guys have worked together!

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
[Laughs] No it’s not. We worked together seven years ago, actually, playing twins in a movie called Murder in the Hamptons. Knowing that we were playing twins before, and then now we’re love interests, it was kind of strange for us.

It was great and I feel like we really took on the challenge of the characters. It really came across well with the viewers. You can tell. They’ve got the Eclare thing, which I think is really funny. It’s going really well.

THE STAR SCOOP:
We want you to tell us why so many people tweeted us that they want to know how old you are. What’s the deal?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
I’ve been getting this since my last show, called The Latest Buzz. I look really young or I could be really young. I don’t want to disclose that, because it’s been such a fun thing to watch them squirm. They get all angsty and they’re like, how old are you? I think it’s just better to let their imagination run wild like any other TV show. One day I’ll release it.

THE STAR SCOOP:
At the very least, will you confirm that it’s either 17 or either 20. One of them is right?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
It is either 17 or 20.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Everybody wants to know what you think about all of the fans and everybody on Twitter. You know, you have armies out there.

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
[Laughs] It’s been really exciting. I had a fan base coming out of my last show, Latest Buzz, and they kind of journeyed onto Degrassi. But it’s kind of surreal. I don’t really see myself as that kind of famous person or anything like that.

It’s humbling to see all these people be so intensely interested in what I do…I’m trying to do the best I can to tweet to them when I can. They’re just awesome. They’re awesome fans and they support me with whatever I do. And they really enjoy my work and that’s my biggest thing. For them to enjoy my work.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How do you prepare or what is your feeling about kissing scenes?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
[Laughs] Kissing scenes. It’s like anything. With me and Aislinn, we were Eli and Clare. The first time kissing it was exciting but you don’t really work for it. You don’t go into the room and prep for it.

It’s kind of like, okay, we’re going to kiss to day. It will be fun. Make sure I have a mint. Dive in and go for it. You can’t be awkward about it, because if you are, then it will look bad. You’ve got to make sure it’s sincere, but just don’t go too far. And be in the moment…be in that character and how they would feel and how they would react.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What are three things we don’t know about you yet?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
All of them basically know I have an identical twin brother. I used to be a nationally ranked trampolinist. I’m not as good as Thomas was, but I was still up there. What else? I don’t even know. I’m a pretty boring guy.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How about, favorite ice cream flavor?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
I love vanilla. I could say many things…my uncle, for one thing, is Colin Mochrie. He’s been my inspiration getting into the industry. He’s my uncle-in-law; his wife is my dad’s cousin. My dad and his cousin, they were kind of like brother and sister growing up, so he’s my uncle by law. We have a good relationship.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Any teasers for what’s to come [on Degrassi]?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
All I can say is that with Degrassi, it’s going to be intense. For a lot of the story lines, you’re not going to be ready. Tell the fans to be prepared!

THE STAR SCOOP:
What do you want to say directly to the fans? What’s your message to them?

MUNRO CHAMBERS:
To the fans, THANK YOU fans! They’re sick. They’re awesome. I love them. Their support gives me reason to perform so well. To keep supporting, and I’ll hopefully deliver properly to you guys.
