Carly Rae Jepsen Interview: “To be completely honest with you…”

THE STAR SCOOP:
For people who don’t know your background, in terms of getting into the industry, could you talk a bit about how you got to where you are today?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
I think that I had a lot of lucky little door openings that went my way. [Canadian] Idol obviously was a big lift up. On Season 5, I ended up being ushered by my high school drama teacher to go to the audition. It was one of those things that I didn’t ever expect to be the thing that worked, but it really was  the first level of exposure that I ever had. I was third in that competition.

After that, it’s not really like there’s anything laid out for you, but it’s definitely a platform to jump off of.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us about your upcoming second album!

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
The new stuff that I’m working on is a little bit more dancy folk, but the same sort of general vibe [as the first album].

THE STAR SCOOP:
When can we expect the album will be out?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
We’re hoping to launch the first single for Valentine’s Day, then the album will follow probably soon after that.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How excited are you for that to happen?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
I’m absolutely thrilled. I think it’s a totally different feeling to have this level of support behind me now that I’m signed with 604 and I’m really familiar with the team of girls that we have at that label, so it just feels like an army of a support system. It’s extremely exciting. I kind of pinch myself over and over when I really think of what a lucky spot I’ve landed in.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Have you decided on the title of the album?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
To be completely honest with you, I’ve renamed the album three times already [laughs]. I don’t totally know yet where it’s gonna land, but I’m having fun A-ing and B-ing options.

We’re still kind of in the heat of getting all of the songs recorded. I start thinking about music videos the moment that I’m writing the song, so obviously all those little details are still in my head.

THE STAR SCOOP:
A lot of people have been asking who you’ve been influenced by and who has inspired your sound.

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
Obviously there’s like those childhood ones, like James Taylor. He’s probably one of my biggest childhood inspirations. I think recently, just this year I’ve gotten a lot more into some current stuff like La Roux. I’m really a big fan of her. I like the Dragonette CD this year a lot. I’m always a John Mayer fan. Those would be the top ones that I can think of.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What goes into the process for you in terms of writing?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
The way I go about writing is, I cowrite with a lot of different people. I have one main partner named Ryan Stewart who did a lot of the tracks with me on the previous album, “Tug of War.” We get together like once every two weeks just to bring around some ideas. I’ve started writing with my guitarist and he’s phenomenal. He’s really into dancy beats, so it’s added a different flavor to things.

I would definitely say that this has been the first year that I’ve really expanded not just writing for myself but writing for some other artists as well..if it’s for another artist, then that’s a different type of writing than for me. [For me it's] just going back to that journal-entry [style], sort of like, what is this feeling and how can I get it across in a song?

THE STAR SCOOP:
You mentioned your songs are journal entry-like, diary-like. Do you actually have a diary or journal that you keep?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
You should see under my bed! I have about 60 diaries, and I don’t think I’ve ever finished one of them. I keep reinventing myself and then I want a new diary to start it off again [laughs]. But I have like scraps of napkins and like little receipts I’ve written on the back of. If I am ever searching for an idea, I can just throw my hand in the big box of it and pull out something.

THE STAR SCOOP:
So we know you got to write with Josh Ramsay…

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
Yeah. Josh is like one of my best friends in Vancouver. The way we met was for a co-write. [The label] had been basically hooking me up with a bunch of different label artists and asked if I would be interested in working with Josh. To be completely honest with you at the time, I didn’t really know who we was. I was like, sure, yeah, totally, let’s do it.

On the first day, we hit it off right away so easily, and it was like half an hour later and we had written “Sour Candy” together, so we just sort of felt like there was something special there. Did a couple tours together after that. He remains one of my best friends.

THE STAR SCOOP:
One of our Twitter fans, Melissa, wanted to know how you feel about the fact that you inspire so many of your fans?

CARLY RAE JEPSEN:
Wow! I feel like, I’m going red in the face [laughs]. I feel very flattered by that. That blows my mind to be honest. It’s kind of hard to take that in and really understand why I would deserve that.

But that’s really very sweet and I think that’s kind of the magic thing about being in this career…the potential to reach people that you’ve never actually met. That is probably the most exciting part.
