Jason Derulo Exclusive Interview

Jason Derulo

THE STAR SCOOP:
Tell us what’s behind your song “Whatcha Say?” What was the process?

JASON DERULO:
Me and J.R.[Rotem] have our own thing called idea time all. We’ll go through collective ideas and see which ideas we like the best. My brother had been telling me that day about how his girlfriend was going to break up with him because he had cheated on her. He just told me how if he gets one more shot, he would really be the man that she needed him to be. I was like, wow, so tell her that, stupid! Just like you told me and maybe she’ll give it a shot. I just thought that was so interesting. That idea, we had the Imogen Heap sample in mind and that just went so perfectly with the content that I had with my brother. “Whatcha Say” is just the appetizer to the entree of the album.

THE STAR SCOOP:
How would you describe the album? What should people expect?

JASON DERULO:
Being that I’m a songwriter – I’ve written for artists like Lil’ Wayne, Pitbull, Danity Kane – I’m really able to take their life and put it on wax and my process is literally sitting in the booth and just saying what’s on my mind. I don’t even put it on paper. I just try to make my records so real. That’s what you’re going to get on my album: real life. You’re going to get great ballads, very up tempo songs. Just let it go. Every song is going to be different.

THE STAR SCOOP:
Who or what has influenced your album?

JASON DERULO:
Everything – life. I have a song that’s really special to me, a big ballad. It’s basically about meeting a girl for the first time. What if we’re meant to be together? What if two years from now she and I would have kids and we’ll be happy and we’ll get married? You just never know. You don’t know how they’re going to affect you. I took everyday experience and then put it into my music. I have a lot musical influences. I was a performing arts kid when I was a kid. I was a kid in performing arts school from elementary school to middle school to high school. I studied classical music. I studied jazz music. I studied ballet, tap. I’d go to a record store and grab any CD I’d never heard before, just for the education aspect. On the album, I’m just full of all kinds of music.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What message do you want your fans to take away from listening to your music?

JASON DERULO:
I want people to have a good time when they listen to my music. I have relationship songs like “Whatcha Say.” People will say, you really helped me out. But I have other songs that are just about having a good time. I have other songs that can help you with suicide. I have songs about cancer, various issues that face society. I definitely want people to have a good time also.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What do you want fans to know about who you are?

JASON DERULO:
I definitely want people to know that the fact that I’m well versed in music. I studied classical music for a long time. I want people to know that I’m goal driven. I’m a very charitable person. I just cut off my hair, 14 inches off my head to give to Locks of Love, for kids that are losing their hair.

THE STAR SCOOP:
What do you want to say to your fans?

JASON DERULO:
I want to thank the fans and my supporters and all my future supporters. The fans are just amazing! I definitely want to thank all my fan
