TheStarScoop.Com caught up with Runner Runner, a group from Huntington Beach, Calif. Runner Runner will release their debut album through a new partnership with EMI Music’s Capitol Records, Clear Entertainment/C.E. Music and Jack Ponti’s MRV label. The band has more than 8 million plays on Myspace, making them a band you’re going to want the scoop on!
The Star Scoop:
For those who are just learning about you, can you describe your sound?
Runner Runner:
I like to think of our sound as anti-gravity pop. They say certain drinks give you wings, but I believe our music can make you feel like anything is possible. If you don’t need anything as profound as that, it can also help get past a broken heart or just have a good time. It helps me every single day.
The Star Scoop:
How did you come together as a group?
Runner Runner:
Runner Runner rose from the ashes, as it were, of our several previous bands, for which we were all songwriters. Through a common love of song that we could not escape, and over years of touring together and seeing the world in our other endeavors came this; what we feel is our ultimate effort in friendship.
The Star Scoop:
What songs would you recommend to listeners to get a good representation of your sound?
Runner Runner:
I would recommend our first single, “So Obvious” if they want to quickly get familiar with our sound. We love big hooks, moving melodies and romantic lyrics. We also love to dance, though we may not be the most graceful dancers. Fun is job number one.
The Star Scoop:
Can you tell us more about the song “So Obvious?”
Runner Runner:
“So Obvious” is a traditional love song, with what we feel is an original frame of mind and hook. We all make sacrifices all the time to fulfill our dreams, everyone. We always feel the void in our lives left where our loved ones and families belong when we are far from home in our various second and third homes out on the road. Think of all the people who are homesick when they go away to college or move to a new city for a job.
We want everyone that matters to us, and everyone who cares to know that everything we do as a band is a labor of love intended to glorify and honor the ones closest to us. It’s a tough choice to make, and it often leaves us with a desperate feeling, but to us it’s obvious that our hearts beat for them.
The Star Scoop:
Are there particular artists or bands that have influenced your music or you as artists?
Runner Runner:
Our favorite bands of all are the seminal power pop artists of the 70s and 80s. I’m as obsessed with Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and the Cars as I am Green Day, They Might Be Giants and Lady GaGa.
The Star Scoop:
Who do you think your music appeals to?
Runner Runner:
I think our music appeals to a very wide demographic. I’ve seen both my Mom and our best friend’s two year old niece singing along at shows. I hope that people of all ages, walks of life and genders can embrace the sense of freedom our songs give to us.
The Star Scoop:
What do you want people to take away from listening to your music?
Runner Runner:
I want people to hear our music and realize that we are just like them; ordinary people with extraordinary dreams. Abandon doubt and listen to your heart. That is my advice to anyone willing to dream. I never thought we would have an opportunity like this, but then again, here we are. Moreover I want people to realize that we could not be more grateful to share our dream with the world. There is no better feeling than witnessing the sound of someone you may not know singing along as you rock out.
The Star Scoop:
Tell us about the response you’re getting on tour!
Runner Runner:
The response we have been getting on tour is phenomenal. There is one song in particular on our new record, “Falling” that seems to instantly sit well with people at shows. They could not have ever heard it before, yet by the time the second chorus rolls around, I can actually hear them singing the words with us!
The Star Scoop:
What should fans know about each of you?
Runner Runner:
Fans should know that they can feel free to touch my hair…I try to keep it clean. Fans should know that Ryan is a goofball and responds well to weirdness and antics. Fans should know that Nick may need a new belt to keep his pants at the appropriate level, but he has a heart of gold to make up for it. Fans should know that Jon is as romantic as he is handsome. Fans should know that James will challenge any body builder to a push up contest. SEE YOU at a show!
The Star Scoop:
What do you want to say to your fans?
Runner Runner:
Our heart beats for you! I want our fans to know that we all believe that without them we have nothing. We know that this chance to be together and put our best foot forward belongs to them even more than it is ours. We want our fans to be proud to listen to our songs and take something amazing away with every word they sing with us at a show. THANK YOU!
